Whenever someone contacts Cast Member Church, they often have a question or two about who we are, what we do, how we do it, and why we do it that way. Below you will find the answers to the most common questions that are asked.
IS CAST MEMBER CHURCH FOR DISNEY CAST MEMBERS ONLY?
The short answer is “yes.” The long answer is that the CM culture is unique, so we are designed for and dedicated exclusively to that context. We do our best to provide a safe environment for Cast Members to be vulnerable and transparent with God and with each other. Whatever is shared in a Communi-D is shared in confidence. For that reason, we limit our ministry to those who are working for or have worked for The Walt Disney Company.
IS CAST MEMBER CHURCH PART OF THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY?
No, we are not recognized, endorsed, or supported by The Walt Disney Company or any of its subsidiaries. They are a business, and we are a ministry.
WHERE AND WHAT TIME ARE YOUR WORSHIP SERVICES?
We do not offer a weekly worship service. And that’s intentional. Instead, we have developed an innovative vehicle for spiritual maturity; a global network of "Communi-Ds."
WHAT IS A COMMUNI-D?
A Communi-D comes together (in-person or online) more frequently than a once-a-week worship service or small group. Each Communi-D is a “family” of CMs who covenant with each other to love as Jesus loves—without condition or prerequisite—and being willing to give up comfort, credibility, and convenience for the sake of others, that they may also know the hope of Jesus. For this reason, our CommuniDs choose to invest their time with and in each other...as a healthy family would.
WHAT IS A COMMUNI-D EXPERIENCE LIKE?
Our Communi-Ds often eat with each other, pray together, share experiences from the day, explore Scripture, learn from the insights and frustrations of others, and seek encouragement and challenge from one another. All of this is done so that we may deepen our love for Jesus (FAITH), deepen our love for our CMC family (TRUST), and deepen our love for every person we encounter in the Cast Member culture (PIXIE DUST) and beyond.
WHERE DO COMMUNI-DS MEET?
Our in-person Communi-Ds meet in hotels, restaurants, food courts, apartments, cafes, coffee houses, and at Disney Park locations (depending on where you are in the world). Since each Communi-D has a unique personality and rhythm for gathering, the location for each Communi-D is equally unique.
We also have multiple global online Communi-Ds. They currently represent Europe, Asia, Oceana, and North America. These CommuniDs are designed to serve as virtual gathering portals for Anaheim, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.
HOW ARE COMMUNI-DS DIFFERENT FROM THE SMALL GROUPS I'VE KNOWN IN THE PAST?
While small groups are beneficial for community and spiritual growth, our Communi-Ds embrace the additional pillars of mission and multiplication. We are called to:
1.) Love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. (Luke 12:30, Romans 12:1)
2.) Love our neighbor––those who are unaware of who He is. (Luke 12:31, Matthew 7:12)
3.) Love one another as Jesus loved us. (John 13:34, Acts 2:44)
4.) Love those who dislike or even despise us. (Matthew 5:43,44)
5.) Make disciples who will make disciples. (Matthew 28:16-20)
The Bible identifies these five pillars as essential to becoming fruitful disciples. We learn how to personalize these pillars in the context of our Communi-Ds.
HOW CAN I JOIN A COMMUNI-D?
Let us know of your interest, your work location (Orlando, Anaheim, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, or Shanghai), your role, and your Cast schedule. Our Director of Communications for CMC:Global, Chloe Toussaint, will be in touch with you to help you get connected.
DOES CAST MEMBER CHURCH OFFER ANY TYPE OF "CORPORATE WORSHIP?"
We host a monthly gathering for our local Communi-Ds to come together and express their praise and wonder as one family. These gatherings are not like a Sunday worship service, with the format of music, announcements, offering, teaching, etc. Our approach is less structured and goes where The Holy Spirit desires. These special times always include extended prayer, singing, Scripture, and words of encouragement to and from each other.
IF YOU DON'T OFFER WORSHIP SERVICES, ARE YOU REALLY A CHURCH?
We certainly hope so. From the beginning, we have used the book of Acts as a foundation for our form and function. Like the two rails on a strand of DNA, CMC has two focuses:
1.) Those who are skeptical and suspicious of Jesus.
2.) Those who want to have a Kingdom Influnece in the lives of those who are skeptical and suspicious of Jesus.
This is why a Communi-Ds is far more fruitful than a weekend gathering. Our experience has revealed that those with no faith background are intrigued––even attracted––to the more relational, "raw Christianity" approach we have chosen to pursue.
WHAT IS YOUR THEOLOGICAL SLANT?
We believe the Bible to be the Word of God, and therefore we trust it to be our source for guidance and application to every aspect of our lives. Our theology (what we believe) never changes because the Bible never changes. We are a member of the Evangelical Free Church of America. You can read our theological distinctives on the EFCA website.
Our methodology (how we function) is always in flux. The Disney and CM cultures are always changing. As a church, we must be willing to shift with them. Cast Member Church may function one way this year but might look a little different next year. We are always learning new forms and functions to be a fruitful Kingdom Influence in the cultural context of Disney.
We trust Jesus to give us the wisdom to navigate these shifts without ever compromising our faith. We choose to be flexible to interact with as many CMs as possible…giving them every opportunity to see Jesus revealed in us and through us.
